The mood was peaceful on the streets, even friendly. Russia's influence in this region is as substantial as it is historical. It is no surprise Russia's recent military occupation of Crimea is a welcome presence to the Russian-speaking majority living there. Not so to those aligned with the nationalist movement in Kiev and western Ukraine. How all this will play out no one knows, but for this day there is calm.
